Don’t let the low score fool you: Super Bowl LVIII between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs is an exciting one.
The first half had a little bit of everything: a 50-yard pass, fumbles, the longest field goal in Super Bowl history, a dropped Chiefs pass, an altercation between Taylor Swift’s boyfriend and his head coach and a 49ers double-pass trick-play touchdown.
Trailing by a touchdown at halftime, the Chiefs took their first lead of the evening in the third quarter as the defense forced three straight three-and-outs and allowed just 3 total yards on the San Francisco 49ers‘ first three possessions of the second half.
Led by defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, the Chiefs largely neutralized tight end George Kittle and running back Christian McCaffrey, keeping Kittle without a catch through the third quarter. A big special teams play by the Chiefs to recover a muffed punt late in the third at the 16-yard line set up the Chiefs’ first touchdown a play later.
In the fourth quarter, the two teams traded scoring drives, but each defense stood tall. The 49ers added a touchdown and a field goal, while the Chiefs scored two field goals in the fourth quarter after big stops by the 49ers’ defense.
Trailing by three with less than two minutes to go, the Chiefs tied it up as time expired on a short Harrison Butker field goal to force overtime.
